Synopsis:

Julian Tenison Woods, a noted geologist and parish priest at Penola in South Australia, met Mary MacKillop in 1860. She was just nineteen years of age but determined that somehow she would work in the service of God.

Between them they established the Sisterhood of St.Joseph, an order of nuns destined to live a life of poverty in their quest to bring an education and a christian upbringing to a generation of lost Catholic souls.

Our story begins on the banks of the Mary River at Maryborough in Queensland in the year 1879. The steamer, the “Egmonton”, prepares to gather its passengers for the voyage to Sydney. Journalist, Stanley James, who writes under the pseudnym ‘Vagabond’ is a passenger. He witnesses the departure of Mary MacKillop and two Josephite sisters. He learns that the Sisterhood has been the subject of a number of scandals which it seems could lead to its destruction.

Vagabond spends the next three years attempting to put the story together. In his search for the truth about Mary MacKillop he comes face to face with Father Woods, who is then engaged in geological studies in the Fish River district of N.S.W., now known as Jenolan Caves.

In a dramatic confrontation between journalist and priest new light is shed on history and the work of a woman who many people believe had the qualities that will one day lead to the Catholic Church’s official recognition of her Sainthood.
